Menorca – The Quiet Isle with
a Storied British Past
Menorca is the northernmost island of the Balearics and is often referred to as the “Green Island.”
Due to its location, the climate is generally slightly cooler, with the Mistral wind frequently sweeping
across the north coast. Meanwhile, the breathtakingly beautiful, sheltered coves in the south capti-
vate visitors with their turquoise waters.
The picturesque port city of Ciutadella, with its narrow harbor stretching deep into the town, is a
popular destination for both sailors and land-based travelers alike. On the eastern end of the island,
the capital Mahón entices visitors with its charming, British-influenced old town and an impressively
vast natural harbor, home to numerous marinas.
Between these two significant port cities, Menorca truly lives up to its “green” reputation, boasting
rolling hills, pastures, livestock farming, and a rich tradition of cheese production. This harmonious
landscape is also the reason why Menorca was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a status
that highlights its remarkably well-preserved natural environment and the balanced coexistence
between nature and local life. Nearly half of the island’s territory is protected, encompassing coast-
al areas, wetlands, farmland, cliffs, and forests. Traditional agriculture, architecture, and Menorca’s
slow rhythm of life form an essential part of this cultural and ecological heritage. The Biosphere
Reserve designation promotes sustainable tourism, responsible development, and the preservation
of Menorca’s authenticity for both residents and visitors.
The island begins to awaken around Easter, as restaurants and hotels start to open their doors, and
gradually winds down in October.
